The Affirmative Form of the Simple Past (Regular Verbs)

The simple past is used to describe completed actions that happened in the past. For regular verbs, forming the simple past is easy: we simply add -ed to the base form of the verb.

Formation Rules:

Most verbs → Add -ed

Example: work → worked, play → played

Verbs ending in -e → Add -d

Example: love → loved, like → liked

Verbs ending in consonant + y → Change y to i and add -ed

Example: study → studied, cry → cried

Verbs ending in a single vowel + consonant (when stressed) → Double the consonant and add -ed

Example: stop → stopped, plan → planned

Examples in Sentences:

• I watched a movie last night.
• She cleaned her room yesterday.
• They visited their grandparents last weekend.
• We studied for the test.

The simple past does not change based on the subject (I, you, he, she, it, we, they). It remains the same for all pronouns.

Using regular verbs in the affirmative form of the simple past is straightforward as long as you follow the spelling rules. Keep practicing to become more confident in using this tense!
