Simple Future with “Going to”
The Simple Future with going to is used to talk about future plans, intentions, and predictions based on present evidence. It helps express what we have already decided to do or what we expect to happen. The structure is quite simple and commonly used in everyday conversations.
1. Structure of “Going to”
Affirmative:
Subject + to be + going to + verb + complement
She is going to travel next month.
We are going to study for the test tomorrow.
Negative:
Subject + to be + not + going to + verb + complement
They are not going to watch TV tonight.
I’m not going to buy a new phone this year.
Interrogative:
To be + subject + going to + verb + complement?
Are you going to visit your parents this weekend?
Is he going to start a new job soon?
2. Uses of “Going to”
Future plans and intentions:
- We use going to when we have already decided to do something in the future.
- I’m going to visit my grandparents next weekend.
- She is going to start a new course next month.
Predictions based on present evidence:
- When we see clear signs that something will happen, we use going to.
- Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain.
- He is driving too fast. He is going to have an accident!
3. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Incorrect: I going to travel tomorrow.
Correct: I am going to travel tomorrow.
Incorrect: She are going to call me later.
Correct: She is going to call me later.
Incorrect: Are you going to plays soccer?
Correct: Are you going to play soccer?
4. Practice: Write About Your Future Plans!
To practice using going to, try writing a few sentences about your future plans. For example:
- Next year, I’m going to learn a new language.
- Tomorrow, we are going to have a party at my house.
- She is going to move to another city soon.
By practicing these structures, you will improve your ability to express future intentions and predictions clearly and confidently!
