Avoiding and Solving Misunderstandings

In conversations, misunderstandings can happen when people do not hear correctly, do not understand a word, or interpret something in the wrong way. To keep communication clear and avoid confusion, we can use some useful expressions and strategies.

  1. Asking for Clarification

Sometimes, we need to ask someone to explain something again. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Sorry, what do you mean? (Desculpe, o que você quer dizer?)
  • Can you clarify that? (Você pode esclarecer isso?)
  • Could you repeat that, please? (Você pode repetir, por favor?)
  • I didn’t catch that. Could you say it again? (Não entendi. Você pode repetir?)
  1. Confirming Information

To make sure we understood correctly, we can repeat the information or ask a confirmation question:

  • Do you mean…? (Você quer dizer…?)
  • So, what you’re saying is… (Então, o que você está dizendo é…)
  • Let me see if I understand correctly… (Deixe-me ver se eu entendi corretamente…)
  • Just to confirm, you are saying that… (Só para confirmar, você está dizendo que…)
  1. Correcting a Misunderstanding

If someone misunderstands what we said, we can correct it politely:

  • Actually, I meant… (Na verdade, eu quis dizer…)
  • No, that’s not what I meant. What I meant was… (Não, não foi isso que eu quis dizer. O que eu quis dizer foi…)
  • Oh, I see the confusion! What I wanted to say is… (Ah, entendi a confusão! O que eu queria dizer é…)
  1. Apologizing for a Misunderstanding

When we realize we misunderstood someone, it is polite to apologize and ask again:

  • Oh, sorry! I misunderstood. (Ah, desculpe! Eu entendi errado.)
  • I see! Now I get it. (Entendi! Agora faz sentido.)
  • My mistake! Thanks for explaining. (Meu erro! Obrigado por explicar.)

By using these expressions, we can communicate more effectively and avoid confusion in conversations. Remember: clear communication is the key to good understanding!
