What is Black Friday?
Black Friday refers to the Friday following thanksgiving It takes place on the fourth Friday in November. It traditionally signals the beginning of the holiday shopping season in the United States. Many retailers open early and frequently advertise promotions with insane discounts. Some retailers extend their offers till Monday or for the whole week. These are known as “Cyber Monday” and “Cyber Week”, respectively.
Since 2005, Black Friday has consistently been the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States.
Why is it called Black Friday?
There are many speculations about the origin of Black Friday. The truth is that Black Friday has been associated with a turbulent history of crowded streets and long traffic jams.
The police in Philadelphia and Rochester, where Black Friday first appeared as early as the 1960s, began to refer to the crowds and traffic jams that accompanied the beginning of the holiday shopping season as “Black Friday.” They had to put in long shifts and deal with awful traffic, unfavorable conditions, and other havoc caused by the holiday.
On that day, local businesses wanted to attract customers. The word “black” in front of a day of the week has historically been used to denote negative events. The first example of such negative historical events was “Black Tuesday”, the day of the 1929 stock market crash. The second one was “Black Monday”, the day in 1987 when the market lost more money than it did on any day in 1929 in terms of percentage.
That is why retailers hated the term and wanted to change the appellation but in vain. For example, the holiday was unsuccessfully rebranded as “Big Friday” by retailers. Later, businesses recovered the appellation Black Friday, claiming that it was the day when books in stores turned from red to black.
Online shopping on Black Friday
Sometimes, Black Friday shoppers become overly enthusiastic. Aggressive behavior develops as people shove one another aside. There are times when shoppers fight each other, resulting in injuries. That is why shopping on Black Friday can be a little unpleasant for some people. They prefer online shopping instead. They can relax and forget about the crowd and the traffic jams. For example, on the 2021 Black Friday, there were 155 million shoppers in the country. A large part of them were online shoppers as online sales totaled $8.9 billion.
