Can  and Could

  In language’s realm where meanings take flight,

Two modals arise, shining bright as daylight.

“Can” and “could,” they’re known far and wide,

In English they journey, side by side.

“Can” is the present, the power to achieve,

It shows what’s possible, what you can believe.

“I can do it,” you proudly declare,

With confidence rising, you’re fully aware.

But “could” is more subtle, it looks to the past,

A chance that was there, a moment that passed.

“I could have tried harder,” you might sadly say,

Reflecting on choices that led you astray.

Together they dance in the language we speak,

Expressing ability, past, and the meek.

“Can” for the present, “could” for the past,

In sentences woven, their roles ever last.

So remember these modals, both vital and good,

In stories and dialogues, as they should.

“Can” and “could,” a dynamic pair,

In English, they show what we can and could bear.
