O nome se refere ao material utilizado nas an\u00e1lises (o DNA mitocondrial), passado das m\u00e3es para filhos e filhas. Essa hip\u00f3tese prop\u00f5e que o&nbsp;<em>Homo sapiens<\/em>&nbsp;surgiu a partir de um grupo isolado na \u00c1frica em torno de 200 mil anos atr\u00e1s, e emigrou para os outros continentes, substituindo todas as outras esp\u00e9cies at\u00e9 ent\u00e3o existentes. A hip\u00f3tese Multirregional sugere que, pelo menos desde 1 milh\u00e3o de anos atr\u00e1s houve cruzamentos entre v\u00e1rias popula\u00e7\u00f5es de&nbsp;<em>Homo<\/em>&nbsp;dispersos pela \u00c1frica, \u00c1sia e Europa, originando o&nbsp;<em>Homo sapiens<\/em>&nbsp;simultaneamente em v\u00e1rias partes do planeta. As diferen\u00e7as entre os diversos grupos se deveriam apenas a adapta\u00e7\u00f5es aos diferentes climas e meio ambientes regionais.
