O primeiro conjunto num\u00e9rico que surgiu foi o <strong>conjunto dos n\u00fameros naturais<\/strong>, cujos elementos representam grandezas inteiras e positivas. Tempos mais tarde algumas contagens n\u00e3o conseguiam mensurar algumas grandezas, como, por exemplo, um peda\u00e7o de um terreno, surgindo ent\u00e3o o <strong>conjunto dos n\u00fameros racionais<\/strong>. Por volta do ano de 530 a.C., houve a necessidade de se mensurar a medida da diagonal de um quadrado e o comprimento de uma circunfer\u00eancia, surgindo ent\u00e3o o <strong>conjunto dos n\u00fameros irracionais<\/strong>.
